The 2023 RAM 1500
The Powertrains
The 2023 RAM 1500 offers 3 powertrains. Depending on which one you choose, you’ll get the towing capacity you need.
- The 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine with eTorque light hybrid system. The Pentastar is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Altogether it produces 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque to which eTorque adds 90 lb-ft at the kickoff. With front-wheel drive (4x2), this powertrain has a towing capacity of 3,495 kg (7,710 lb).
- The 2023 RAM 1500 with 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque released by the big 5.7L HEMI V8 increases its towing capacity up to 5,783 kg (12,750 lb).
- The RAM TRX-specific 6.2L HEMI supercharged V8 engine delivers 702 hp, 650 lb-ft of torque and a towing capacity of 3,673 kg (8,100 lb).
The Pentastar V6 powertrain is standard on Tradesman and Big Horn models, while the 5.7L HEMI V8 is standard on Sport, Rebel, Laramie, Limited Longhorn and Limited models.
Suspension and Active Air Intake
The 2023 RAM 1500 features a front suspension with coil-over shocks. The 5-link rear suspension with progressive coil shocks provides better control when towing heavy loads.
If you choose the available air suspension, when you’re traveling at high speeds, it will lower the body of your 2023 RAM 1500 to increase its aerodynamics and contribute in reducing fuel consumption, even when towing a heavy load.
Designed for efficiency, the 2023 RAM 1500 also features an active air intake. At high speeds, this air intake deploys to reduce drag. At the same time, the active grille flaps close to reduce air turbulence entering the engine compartment.
The Tailgate and Storage Space
Before you pull a trailer or load the bed, you need access. The easier the access, the better! The 2023 RAM 1500 tailgate is unique! It splits 60/40 and can open like a door or fold down like a traditional tailgate. Moreover, you can add a step for easy entry into the bed.
Whether you use your RAM 1500 pickup for work or leisure, the more equipment and tools you carry, the more storage space you need. The RamBox storage compartments are safe and secure. They are illuminated by a LED bulb and have a 115-volt power outlet. It’s important to point out that the RamBox can be locked/unlocked remotely.
The RAM 2500 Heavy Duty
The Engines
The RAM 2500 Heavy Duty offers exceptional towing capacities. Of course, its powerful 6.4L HEMI V8 and 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel engines with inline 6 cylinders have a lot to do with it. Yet, it also requires a robust chassis and several high-performance mechanical components.
The Chassis
The RAM 2500 steel chassis is capable of handling 50,000 lb/in. and the multi-link spring rear suspension provides excellent truck and trailer control when hauling heavy loads.
The Suspension
The RAM 2500 can also be equipped with an Auto-Level rear 4-wheel air suspension. This air suspension allows you to lower the bed for loading and then level the RAM 2500 once the load is completed.
Fifth Wheel Coupling
When the RAM 2500 is powered by the Cummins 6.7L turbodiesel, 4-pin and 7-pin wiring connectors and an integrated trailer brake module are standard with the Cummins engine.
Furthermore, the addition of an available fifth wheel/gooseneck package will optimize the 2023 RAM 2500 towing capacity.
The RAM 3500
The Remarkable Cummins Turbodiesel
The towing capacity of the RAM 3500 is phenomenal. When the RAM 3500 hood houses the high-output 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel engine, this truck can tow up to 16,824 kg (37,090 lb). No other pickup in the world is capable of such performance!
Fifth Wheel and Air Intake Control
To tow such loads, factory installation of a fifth wheel gooseneck is necessary. In addition, the 2023 RAM 3500 is equipped with the RAM Activ Air dual dynamic air intake system.
This device automatically adjusts the air intake according to changes in temperature and driving conditions. The Activ Air engine control module monitors extreme heat spikes, changes in altitude when driving in the mountains, and the humidity of the ambient air. Activ Air adjusts the air intake accordingly.
Dual Rear Wheel Suspension
The 2023 RAM 3500 with dual rear wheels are equipped with a rear suspension system that includes auxiliary leaf springs. These shocks improve truck control when hauling heavy loads.
Towing Assistance Technologies
Several driving assistance technologies constantly inform the driver of the performance of their RAM truck. These towing and driving assistance technologies also provide the driver with a lot of information about his environment during the trip and during parking operations.
The instrument collection with the 12" digital display provides information on fuel consumption during trailer braking and engine performance. Rear-facing cameras integrated in the side mirrors allow the driver to have a full view of the trailer as well as side views to the left and to the right by simply looking at the digital mirror.
You can also add the cargo view camera to the RAM 3500 assistants. This camera is paired with the high-mounted brake light. Both are mounted on the upper rear structure of the cabin. This set allows the driver to monitor the load platform and take a look at the fifth wheel hooks and the rear bumper. The driver can see these images on the 12" touchscreen on the dashboard.
Finally, turn signal-activated blind spot cameras display side and rear views in the digital mirror when changing lanes.
